Treatment, visit by visit

Every mouth is different, so these are ranges and not promises. Your orthodontist gives you a plan that fits you.

  1. 01
    1 visit

    Step 1: Consultation

You meet the orthodontist, who looks at your teeth and bite and asks what you want. You hear whether treatment makes sense now, later or not at all.

  2. 02
    1 to 2 visits

    Step 2: Records

Photos, X-rays and a scan of your teeth. The doctor uses them to plan. Some patients do records at the first visit, and others come back.

  3. 03
    1 to 2 visits

    Step 3: Appliance

Braces are put on, or your first set of aligners is handed over. We show you how to clean them, what to eat and what to do if something breaks.

  4. 04
    Every 4 to 10 weeks

    Step 4: Check-ins

Wires are adjusted or new aligner sets are handed over. Many treatments run from about one to three years. Yours depends on your mouth and on how closely the plan is followed.

  5. 05
A few visits over a year or more

    Step 5: Retainers

Retainers are made when active treatment ends, and you come back to check that your teeth are holding. Wear them as directed.

Book brothers and sisters back to back

One trip can cover everyone in the family.

Tell us how many people are coming and which office you prefer. We line up visits in the same hour when the schedule allows, so nobody waits through a sibling's appointment twice.

How it works

  • Same office, same hour, when the schedule allows

  • One written estimate for each person

  • A parent stays with a child at every visit

What families tell us

“Both of my kids had their visits in the same hour. I took one afternoon off instead of two, and the doctor spoke to each of them, not just to me.”

Courtney L.Parent

“I wanted to know if aligners would work for me. I got an honest answer and a written plan, and nobody pushed me to start that day.”

Sanjana P.Adult patient

“The estimate listed every step. When our plan paid less than we guessed, we already knew what to expect.”

Before you call

Do you take my insurance?

We file claims with the dental plans we are in network with, and the list is on the How fees work page. Orthodontic benefits are separate from cleanings and fillings, so we check yours before treatment starts and tell you what we find.

Do you see children, and from what age?

We offer an early check around age 7, or sooner if your dentist asks us to look. A first check is a look at how teeth and jaws are coming in. Many children go home with a plan to check again in a year or two.

Will it hurt?

Teeth and gums are usually sore for a few days after braces are put on and after new sets of aligners. Soft foods and the pain relievers your doctor suggests help most people. Tell us if anything cuts, pokes or hurts more than you expected, and ask for a break at any visit.

Can I get a written estimate before treatment?

Yes. You can ask for a written estimate before any treatment. It lists the treatment, the visits we expect and the fee, so you can take it home and decide.
